Mrs? Or is that Ms, Miss? (Or does it matter?)

In recent days the European Parliament has again caused "outrage" in the British press after publishing a pamphlet asking staff to refrain from using the titles Miss or Mrs. "Ludicrous", one Tory MEP told the Daily Mail. "Political correctness gone mad", he continued. Another, in the Daily Telegraph, branded it a "waste of taxpayers' money". It is more than 30 years since Ms began to gain ground among a US feminist movement keen to find a title which did not denote a woman's marital status. Decades later - while being a Ms might be seen in Brussels as simple as being, well, a Mr - many elsewhere are less keen to catch on.

Although I'm a rather staunch feminist, I've never been hugely bothered about being called Ms rather than Miss. In fact, I've often gone with Miss just because I felt like it. (As of two months ago, of course, I'm now 'Doctor', but that's another matter. And shameless boasting, I'm sorry!).

But what is your stance on the Mrs/ Miss/ Ms debate?

Hmm, it's a tough one - and I guess a matter of what you're comfortable with personally.

When I'm operating in the English-speaking world I find it bizarre to be referred to as "Mrs", since I don't see why I should be defined by my marital status. On the other hand "Miss" makes me feel like I am 10 again, and "Ms", well, I guess it's OK.

When I used to live in France though, I disliked being referred to as "Mademoiselle" as it implied the person I was speaking with thought I was too young to be operating in the grown-up world. "Madame" made me feel like I had come of age.

Contradictory, I know!

Rachel, I'm very sorry for taking so long to respond to you on this - it's been a busy week!

Anyway, I have read before that 'Mademoiselle' is disliked a lot my French people (and others) because it represents girl rather than woman. So I can see why you disliked that.

But, yes, it's a tough one. And I fluctuate myself a lot.

Thanks for the recommendation and comment. :)
