NP Rank:
Much Ado About Nothing
Despite having the biggest SL Tamil community outside SL, Canada's Tamils have miserably failed to generate the sympathy wave they expected, in the Canadian general public, who usually are "such saps for a sob story," says Kelly McParland, Editor-National Post.
According to Kelly, the Tamils' two weeks of parading, waving terrorist flags and chanting pro-terrorist slogans, haven't resulted in anything Other than the "regulation" humanitarian aid call. Even the sly politicians who are hungry for a few ethnic votes have stayed away.
He goes on to add that the Canadians are well aware of the LTTE terror tactics of fund raising such as threats, blackmail, violence, extortion, holding Tamils in Sri Lanka hostage.
Canadians are such saps for a sob story we take pride in the fact, viewing it as part of our national heritage.
There's a reason Canada is flooded with "refugee" claims from countries like Mexico or the Czech Republic, and that our waiting list of immigration applications is nine years long. We don't ask a lot of questions, we trust everyone to keep their promises, and we hate saying no, in case we hurt anyone's feelings.
So it's noteworthy that Canada's Tamils have so singularly failed to generate the anticipated wave of national indignation for their cause. Ours is the biggest Tamil community outside Sri Lanka, and it's pretty clear their friends and family back home are going through hell. Canada's Tamils spent two weeks waving flags and chanting on Parliament Hill, five days blocking traffic on University Avenue in Toronto, and marched around Vancouver as well.
Yet apart from some ritual calls for humanitarian aid the response has been notable for what didn't happen rather than what did. Neither Stephen Harper nor Michael Ignatieff was willing to venture out to address the crowd in Ottawa. MPs stayed away, resisting the opportunity to pander to some juicy ethnic votes. In Toronto their main achievement was to irritate commuters to the point that police finally told the last few desultory chanters -- caught in a downpour on a grey afternoon -- that it was time to go home.

Great post Sudharaka.
Judging by the comments of even some Canadian NP members, the Canadians don't seem to like this obvious support for the LTTE, the Tamil Diaspora is displaying.

People would mind losing a day or two to demon-strations supporting terrorism. But not much people will be ready to suffer for weeks together.
The patience of Canadians..!

No Agent,
More than having to suffer this harrassment, I saw some NP members saying on another thread that they can clearly see that the Sympathy is for the LTTE and they are suspicious if there is any for the Civilians at all.
And I agree. Else, why no call to LTTE to release the civilians?

Yes.
Whoever watched the movie Slumdog Millionair know that in certain parts of India, there are gangs that maim and deform children and use them for begging as they get sympathy.
If you see the propaganda of LTTE terrorists, you can see the similar traits. Using the photos of dead and injured tamils who are killed and maimed by the LTTE themselves to grab attention of the western countries. Then they equate their terrorism to "freedom fight". Finally like some beggars carry the religious symbols to earn money, this LTTE terrorists compare their terrorist activities to Holocaust of Jews by Nazis to which the Western countries are very much familiar. In addition to this the use of words like "genocide", "cluster bomb" and "rape" just to grab the west’s attention – like the beggars showing their physical deformation to earn money.
LTTE and supporters are doing all these only to force the Western countries to loose their purse strings. But at the time of recession, any country would think thrice before committing any coins. So the funds to LTTE are dried up. That is the reason these people are using this kind of intimidation tactics in the west, using the loop holes of their "freedom of expression” laws.
The diasporans never knew this because they are all blinded by the "promised land" propaganda of LTTE.

They haven't all gone home though ...

Most of them left their less affluent relatives at home when they migrated. I think it is better for them to stay back in foreign countries and make a hue and cry regarding something/anything in Sri Lanka and continue to enjoy the luxuries of their newly adopted foreign lands.
Can you imagine the plight of some diasporans who donated tens of thousands of dollars anticipating a return on the formation of Eelam in Sri Lanka. A dream shattered indeed.
