NP Rank:
Mugabe Defeated?
According to news from the MDC [Movement for Democratic Change] and reported from the BBC News Website, President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe may have lost the Presidential Elections. According to the report, there were areas in which the MDC may have won with 67% of the vote. At the present time, the counting of votes have been delayed. Many countries have warned Mugabe that a delay in vote counting could further tensions in Zimbabwe.
Robert Mugabe has ruled Zimbabwe since Independence from Great Britain in 1980 [under an agreement in which Great Britain resumed control of Rhodesia from Ian Smith and Abel Muzorewea]. In spite of promises of reconciliation, many people left Zimbabwe shortly after independence. Mugabe was responsable for massacres in 1982 and allowed North Koreans to have a presence in the country. At the same time, Mugabe tried to show a semblance of democracy but his nationalisation of the white owned farms and repression of the press contributed to the unmasking of his true intentions.
In 2008, Robert Mugabe was using this election as an attempt to extend his time in office. He refused Western Monitors saying that they will undermine him. At the same time, he accepted moniotrs from Libya and the Sudan.
If there is anyone who could contribute to this recently uncovered story [especially those who live close to or inside Zimbabwe], please feel free to do so. Thank You.

Thanks for the post. It looks like there's a delay in the announcement of official election results. Link to BBC article here.

According to BBC News Reports, Tendai Biti of the MDC has reported that MDC has won 60% of the votes compared to 30% for Mugabe. Biti also complains of rigging and that Zimbabwe is at a "precipice".
