Taliban Blames Mullah Omar Death Tweet on 'Phone Hacking'
The Taliban has its own phone hacking scandal. An SMS sent in May 2011 proclaiming the death of Mullah Omar has been denounced as a hoax.
Since so few outside the Taliban have ever met their one-eyed leader, the rumor was hard to confirm, but also hard to quash.
One of the spokesmen Zabihullah Mujahid told Reuters that the "Americans have hacked our cellphones with advanced technology and sent the messages".
Usually "hacking" is blamed for ill-advised celebrity tweets, but it can also apply to the supposed deaths of religious-fanatic militia leaders.
Actually, we're learning just how low-tech phone hacking can be.
