Former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf is behind the ongoing move to dislodge Shujaat Hussain as the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q, the former ruling party he midwifed, and seize its leadership to begin a formal political career, political sources here said Sunday.

Sources within the PML-Q say that Hussain will complete his second four-year tenure as the party’s chief next year and cannot run for a third term. To retain his grip on the party Hussain wants his cousin and former Punjab chief minister Pervez Elahi to replace him but is facing difficulties as rebellion within the ranks is swelling against the Chaudhry cousins of Gujrat.

The man supporting efforts to replace Hussain as party president is Hamid Chattha who has lately been keeping a close contact with Musharraf. Senior leaguers in the party are pretty sure now that Musharraf is quite keen to enter politics sooner than later.
