Muslim or Brown...
With time comes tolerance, understanding and acceptance... or so we were told. One would think that in today's age of fast travel, global communication and rapid information exchange, we should have a world which is less racist and more tolerant. But this does not seem to be the case.
As the world is becoming more accessible to all, it is also becoming more and more small. The more we are learning about other cultures the less we want to share our world with others. Is this the case? I think for the last century or so, there has been immense migration from east to west and very minute movement from west to east.
This has caused an imbalance in global immigration pattern. Immigrants are always willing to accept less and work for less because for them its a new start and probably a big leap forward just reaching the new land. This in turn upsets the local job markets.
With time, immigrants get more settled down and realize that they can have more if they ask for more. A new element in thus induced in te society and culture. This may not be acceptable to the natives and a state of hidden conflict begins to emerge. Change is always viewed cautiously by humans.
So for so long, people from the east have been coming to the west to start new lives and new beginnings. What happened suddenly that caused such panic, hate and disgust towards them? Was it just one incident... 9/11 that made all brown skinned Muslims eligible for hate or was it a collection of events, incidents and factors accumulated for years?
I believe that mere 9/11 (though a very big tragedy) could not have created a hatred so great towards the Muslim community. It is a well orchestrated movement by hidden (but powerful) forces. Why someone would want to do this is something we must try and find out.
Now Muslims are being cornered. They are being openly ridiculed and targeted. Is it because of their own doing? Are Muslims demanding too much? Is their culture really that different and demanding? Are Western values and Muslim values so different that co-existence is impossible? If so then how come for several decades there were no problems... and why all of a sudden Muslims have become terrorists and extremists?
I think that by labeling Muslims as terrorists, and by making Islam synonymous with terrorism and extremism, we have cornered the Muslims. We have stopped differentiating between majority of moderate Muslims and minority of extremist Muslims. This is making life of moderate Muslims more and more difficult. As these moderate Muslims are pushed further away from the society they have no choice but to end up either isolated and become outcasts or join the extremist side. In short by not recognizing the moderate Muslims as productive and positive parts of our society we are creating more and more extremists.
