Muslim woman deemed too submissive to be French; incompatible with French Equality

I'm not sure, but this may be the first case of its type on the world. This is bound to be a very controversial decision.

PARIS (Reuters) - France has denied citizenship to a veiled Moroccan woman on the grounds that her "radical" practice of Islam is incompatible with basic French values such as equality of the sexes, a legal ruling showed on Friday.

The case will reignite debate about how to reconcile freedom of religion, which is guaranteed by the French constitution, and other fundamental rights, which many in France feel are being challenged by the way of life of some Muslims.

Le Monde newspaper said it was the first time a Muslim applicant had been rejected for reasons to do with personal religious practice.

"She has adopted a radical practice of her religion, incompatible with essential values of the French community, particularly the principle of equality of the sexes," said a ruling by the Council of State handed down last month and sent to Reuters on Friday to confirm a report in Le Monde.

good stuff:

PEP, I like this story. It's good stuff.   Hmmm there's about 50 million Muslims in France that might disagree with that!

This is an interesting case, isn't it Cao? Thanks for the read and the flag.  :)

An interesting side note about this particular woman on the blog Islam in Europe:

"Faiza M. had confirmed that she was not veiled when she lived in Morocco and that she had adopted the dress after arriving in France at the request of her husband, and that she does so more out of habit than conviction."

Another note from Melanie Phillips, author of "Londonistan, How Britain is Creating a Terror State Within":

...'wearing the niqab and burka was a political act used by Muslims to show that they did not want to integrate or intend to observe our laws by sending a message that their loyalty is only to Allah.'

This I had not read before: "'wearing the niqab and burka was a political act used by Muslims to show that they did not want to integrate or intend to observe our laws by sending a message that their loyalty is only to Allah.'"  Wow.

Thanks for the read, the material--I want to read that book--and the flag!

I can't believe I'm going to say this but here it goes. Good for France!

PEP

Me, too! Viva La France! It looks like France is the first Western nation to draw a line in the sand and say "Live up to our culture." Thanks for the flag.

What a ridiculous / interesting decision...

I had not heard of this before, and I guess France has the right to do whatever they want; I just wonder what this could mean for many other Western Nations?

The really dangerous people for any state or community are those that look for all intent and purpose the same as everyone else and yet harbour racist, mysogynistic, fundamentalist views that see only themselves and beliefs as worth anything, etc. etc.

Looking and acting differently surely are what have singled this woman out rather than any intrinsic danger to the well-being of France - maybe sprinkle in a little institutionalised racism from the court/state system and we have a decision that could fuel more urban discontent in Paris and other bif French towns with large Muslim populations of the sort seen last year.

SOLARLIFE

France is a country that likes to live in style, fashion, perfumes, food ....

veiled women, forced by their men still living in their "desert home town" are a optical problem for french people. Often combined with health problems in the south of france. The people wearing the heavy clothes have often no washing machine or access to dry them. No problem in the desert but a problem in the south with epidemic lice, scabbies  spreading over the schools meanwhile uncontrolled in allmost every second family. In the south french people have not even a carpet to stay healthy, others with no  eductation don't understand hygiene. The burka would be more fitting to men, who still have to learn to look with respect to women. You see the problem here, the men. Women not veiled may be considered by their so easy excited men as free target. Young women anyway prefer to dress International and have a drivers license.
