NEW SOUTH WALES - Monday saw a new law come into force in NSW, that will allow a child's birth certificate to list the name of two mothers.

The NSW Attorney-General John Hatzistergos first announced this legislation back in April, in a bid to remove existing discrimination against same-sex couples, including this recognition of co-mothers as legal parents of a child conceived through donor insemination.  New rights for co-mothers also include parental rights regarding medical consent, inheritance, workers compensations, and custodial rights in the event of a break-up.
Emily Gray, Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (GLRL) Co-Convenor, said that with around 1000 children in NSW with two mothers, the legislation “finally reflects the reality of Australian families in 2008”.

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore embraced the legislation in a speech in parliament [in June]. “The new laws are in the best interests of the children of lesbian couples, who currently have less financial and emotional security than the children of heterosexual couples,” she said. Moore added that she will continue to support the GLRL’s push for same-sex adoption rights in New South Wales.
The Lobby has been consistently campaigning for these changes since 2003. On the question of adoption Co-Convenor Peter Johnson said, “These reforms are a leap forward for equality in NSW, but are one bar short of the finish line. Equality for gay and lesbian people must include adoption reform to ensure same-sex couples are eligible to be considered as adoptive parents.”
Attorney-General John Hatzistergos has said that the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages has already received more than 100 inquiries about the new certificates.

mchawk, I like this story. It's good stuff.

That is be on logic and Reality. Maybe Mickey Mouse could now be listed as well on Birth Certificate.

I am supporting equal rights and Justice as well as tolerance, however this is not realistic and harmful for the Children that have to grow up with enough troubled adults as is.

mchawk, I like this story. It's a great story.  Ive looked on my birth certificate and no one is mentioned!  But maybe that is because I lost the original.  I think its great for the two parents:  I dont think it matters for the kids involved.  They are pretty indifferent to bureaucratic niceties. I guess it also means that the biological father need not be mentioned if there is another father who will be caring for the children.
