Myanmar's 'Secret Tunnels' Revealed
Myanmar's 'secret tunnels' were revealed on a Norwigan television station run by Burmese exiles. The group, Democratic Voice of Burma, claims that hundreds of underground facilities are being built.
It is rumoured that Myanmar military personnel are being questioned regarding the leak.
Lintner has obtained the first ever images of this secret tunnel building effort along with photos of foreign advisers, almost certainly from North Korea. Lintner’s research also shows that apart from Burma, the buyers for North Korean tunneling technology possibly include Hezbollah in Lebanon.
North Korea and Myanmar have developed close ties since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2007.
According to the Irrawaddy report, a high-level Myanmar military delegation made a week-long secret visit to North Korea in November 2008, reportedly to see Pyongyang's underground military installations.
The Myanmar delegation also reportedly inspected North Korean arms factories and later officially formalised military co-operation between the two countries.
The US navy is currently tracking a N. Korean freighter headed for Myanmar. The freighter may be carrying military hardware.
