Mychal Bell Hospitalized after Shooting

Mychal Bell, one of the Jena Six, shot himself yesterday. A lawyer for the family has stated that it was an accident, and not a suicide attempt.

Bell and five others at his school were thrust into the world spotlight after the beating of a white classmate during a time of high racial tension, including the hanging of nooses from a campus tree. NowPublic has previous coverage here and here.

Mychal Bell was cleaning a gun when it accidentally discharged, shooting him in the shoulder, his attorney, Carol Powell-Lexing, told CNN. He had surgery Monday night at a hospital in Monroe, Louisiana, and has not yet been able to talk, she said.

Monroe police Sgt. Cassandra Wooten said the wound was not life-threatening.
