Nadja Benaissa Found Guilty For Infecting Man With HIV
Nadja Benaissa From the German Band No Angels Was Found Guilty of Having Unprotected Sex With a Former Boyfriend and Giving Him HIV
The singer received a two-year suspended sentence for having unprotected sex with the man even though she knew she was HIV positive at the time. She had previously admitted that she had unprotected sex and kept her infection secret, but she says she never intended to infect anyone.
Al Jazeera English reports that Benaissa and the man she infected have a fairly rare form of the HIV virus, so medical experts concluded that she had almost certainly infected this man. He says they had a three-year relationship in 2004. She had also had unprotected five times between 2000 and 2004, with two other people, but those were not infected.
He launched a bitter and scathing attack on the singer during the trial, accusing her of causing "a lot of suffering in this world".
Benaissa told the court that she had found out she was HIV positive at the age of 16, when she also found out she was pregnant after living on the streets and becoming addicted to crack since the age of 14. She kept her illness a secret when she won a television talent show in 2000 and formed the girl band No Angels. She says she had been told by doctors that she had such a low risk of transmitting the virus to anyone else.
