Naked bike ride runs foul of police
Green activists in the northern Greek port city of Thessaloniki clashed with riot police during their attempt to hold a naked bike ride in order to protest excessive car use. Senior police officials, however, had warned that anyone not wearing clothes would be arrested and so the ride went ahead with the protesters clothed in beach wear and body paint.
According to protest spokesperson Kostas Terzopoulos Thessaloniki is the dirtiest city in Europe especially in term of pollution and that excessive car use leads to massive problems with air quality and noise pollution.
Problems began when riot police closed the main road leading into the city and forcibly arrested an English protester who they claimed was naked. Amidst tense scenes the hundred or so cyclists eventually persuaded the riot police to let the bike ride continue.
Later cyclists closed the main Tsimiski St with a sit down protest in order to demonstrate against the detainmenτ of their fellow protester who was, according to police authorities set free. They condemned the police handling of the ride as heavy handed and out of all proportion.
The Greek police force has a chequered history as far as the handling of public demonstrations and has often been the target of complaints and law suits over excessive use of force. Last September English teacher and NowPublic contributer, Craig Wherlock was hopitalised by riot police for taking pictures during a peaceful march.Whilst in November 2006 Cypriot student, Augustinos Dimitrios was savagely beaten by plain clothes officers. Despite the fact that the incident was captured by TV cameras and shown on national TV no officer has been charged with a criminal offense.
According to the national daily Eleutherotypia newspaper one person per week died in custody in Greece in 2007. Whilst the country has been convicted seven times by the European Court of Human Rights for police abuse.

Teacher Dude, I like this story. It's good stuff.
As my mother would say, "What a skriss!" –an Irish colloquialism, meaning senseless and outrageous, at the same time.
...and, the campaign to reroute the M3 fwy west of the Hill of TARA (in Ireland) has, basically, been decided by the EU Commissioner for the Environment Stavros Dimas. What hope have we!? (On that issue, see this website)

Teacher Dude, I like this story. It's good stuff. Great photos and original content.
Also, very smart of them to change the no clothing into beachwear.

Teacher Dude, I like this story. It's good stuff. Thanks for bringing this story to us and the startling revelations of the police.
I remember a cleaner who worked in an office I worked at, many years ago, how he heard a prisoner being beaten up in his police cell when he worked in a Kent Police Station. In view of this, I doubt all abuses are being recorded.

Well done to the Greeks!!
Think of it if they wanted to protest about the environment why be offensive to people? People would be more receptive to their point if they weren't offensive and they’d get a lot more participants. They're not interested in the environment, this World Naked Bike Ride movement is a front for nudists to mainstream nudity in public. Its meant to get us more and more used to naked people in our city centres. Very clever you see if object we’re not just old prudes also we mustn’t care about the environment and before we catch on we’ll be more used to nudity anyway.
These are mainly hardcore nudists few are there for the dare or have duped themselves that they have to be free with their body but its naive to think it won't draw some who see it as a free way to flash at children.
Think we need to learn somethign from the Greeks, think I'm doing a citizens arrest next year.
