Opinion-Editorial By Albert N. Milliron, Editor Politisite.com

When Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi took the Gavel to become the first woman Speaker of the House she stated that in her first one hundred days she would, “Drain the Swamp” from nearly ten years of  the Republican, “Culture of Corruption”. She had another thing to say In her speech, that “It Just Might Take a Woman to Clean The House” of ethics violations perpetrated by the Republicans.

Recently the Obama Administration released classified documents that contained information about Enhanced Interrogation Techniques (EIT) that were used on high value enemy combatants to foil additional attempts on the security of the United States. These techniques provided actionable intelligence that kept America safe during the, “War on Terror”.

The Obama Administration then came out in favor of the Justice Department doing an investigation to determine if there were any laws that had been broken from the former administration all the way down to the attorneys who drafted the briefs on EIT. Obama flip-Flop from his former position on the issue.  That is when things began to go a bit wrong for the democrats. During a press conference last month, Pelosi stated, “In that or any other briefing we were not, I repeat, were not told that water boarding or any of these other enhanced interrogation techniques were used. They did not tell us they were used, “flat out” They said she was briefed what, “ might be used” and other logistical information needed for oversight. She included that the, “CIA is in the business of deception”.  Possibly to discredit the recent disclosures that seem to implicate her in a cover-up.

Nancy Pelosi has maintained that she is opposed to waterboarding calling it torture. But in the aforementioned 2002 briefing while she was the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, she was fully briefed on (AIT) including water boarding that was performed on Abu Zubaydah. Others at the same meeting seem to have a view that is polar opposite to Pelosi's recollection of what was discussed.

The question rises, If Speaker Pelosi was so against advanced integration techniques, why did she not go on record as being against the techniques in those briefings. Why did she not report her disapproval on the House Floor when the appropriations came up for a vote?  On the House floor, Pelosi related that she was able to voice her differences under the direction of chairman Congressman Porter Goss and moved that the appropriations be approved by the full House.

With all this, Americans are still waiting for the Swamp to be drained and the House to be cleaned. The most Ethical Congress in History is still lacking. Speaker Pelosi continued with the mantra that Republican operated under a, “Culture of corruption”. The writer sees little to suggest that the democrats have done anything to bring our government back to the people with open disclosure and defrocking those who violate the very oaths they affirm when entering into public service.

Today, Many sides of the issue are calling for Nancy Pelosi’s removal, but the Political strategist part of me wonders why the Obama Administration would put Democrat against Democrat with his full authority to diminish Speaker Pelosi. Why are many calling for her resignation since there is a vast chasm between what the CIA , Pelosi, and others are saying happened in those meetings, I feel that political expediency to “get rid” of the speaker and to install another weaker speaker who will be more committed to the President is part of a political agenda..

While we all hope that our Government works honestly and for the people. The real issue is pushing agendas and gaining power. The Obama administration now has both houses of Congress and will soon have additional power in the Judicial branch. He is working quickly while he is still a popular to get his agendas presented and passed before the 2010 election. With Pelosi out of the way, he could have a weak speaker who will just allow his full agenda to pass with little or no debate as was the case on the stimulus package. The Obama Motto is, “Never allow a crisis go to waste”. The Pelosi affair is another crisis the Administration will use to it's advantages to tie up all branches of government to push his socialist agenda.

I say, to my fellow conservatives, Stop will the calls for Speaker Pelosi to resign.  Allow her to continue her term.  There is a better day to fight and it is in 2010 where Speaker Pelosi becomes a liability for the democrats and will be a weapon for the Republicans.

“It Just Might Take a Woman to Clean The House”, said in her "Tricky Dicky" moment of playing with the truth, is a sign of  being taken by hubris.

All individuals have a shadow and all groups have a shadow, meaning an aspect of themselves that is truly in need of recognition as a potential source of evil, an aspect of actual moral inferiority that goes unseen in our selves.

Not being seen, we project the evil elsewhere, onto other individuals and groups.

Besides that, all women have a masculine side as all men have a feminine side.

The women of today's world will have a masculine side remarkably like the men around them, and the opposite holds true for men.

Healing the rift between masculine and feminine values will involve both sexes simultaneously.

I agree with your premise.  When Leon Panetta, Director of the CIA and former White House Chief, came out last week to defend the Agency against Pelosi, this would have been an act of courage.  On the other hand it may have been closely synchronized with the White House.
Here's is a link that makes an interesting read.  Click Here

I can not find better words than this, so.  I cannot believe I am the only one who is sick to death of the GOP and its apologists in the main stream media delivering the message , "Pay no attention to the torture behind the curtain; crucify Nancy Pelosi!"

I am not about to defend Pelosi.  You would be hard-pressed to find anything I have ever said or written that was complimentary to her. There are many Democrats in the House I would rather have seen ascend to the Speaker's chair.  But, having said all that, it still makes no sense to be analyzing her words and actions under a figurative microscope, while ignoring the only burning question about this matter, which is "Who ordered, approved and carried out illegal torture and other war crimes in the name of this great nation."

a good artical & discussion.

Spydermonkey, the question is much deeper than that.  As one from North of the Border, I see it this way.  This is a very partisan issue and both the GOP and the Democrats are trying to score points.  Personally, I think President Obama would like this whole issue to go away.  Unfortunately someone let the lid get off the box and now it is hard to close.

In essence there is the one issue of who ordered what and when, on the other hand the issue is who was briefed as early as 2003 and didn't object then.  Either you thought Enhanced Interrogation is torture and opposed it or you condoned it.

I saw an article yesterday where a coalition of groups is going after lawyers who rendered a legal opinion, by going to their state bars, to get them disbarred.  Since when is rendering an opinion illegal?

Personally, I think America would be best served to stop this discussion and this very open fight for all the world to see.  If the Obama Administration deems it wrong to have used these techniques, change it, as they did, and move on.

From my point of view this issue is split straight down party lines and will do nothing to unite America.

Thanks for your insightful comments.  While I and other United States military endured what we call enhanced interrogation Techniques, I do buy into the USA should be clean and an example to the world.  I am torn but only slightly as I would tear up anyone who would harm my family to get the information necessary to have them released.  I live in a Bigger family called the United States.  My brothers ans sisters in this county matter to me as well.  So what to do?  The argument is much deeper and complicated then either side is able to communicate.

As far as Nancy Pelosi, The Democrats have some excellent candidates that could move America forward.  The speaker is as polarizing as George Bush or Rush Limbaugh..

From a conservative perspective, I hope that the Speaker Reamins through 2010

Accountability and transparency demand that those in charge take responsibility for the policies undertaken in their names as our representatives in our democratic republic. She didn't do that and that undermines the premise of the Obama administration and the left that no one on the left is as guilty as the Bushies are for the use of so-called "torture" and that the use of these techniques is part of a mindset which is, in itself, criminal, a kind of indictment done in prose of the sort that Rev. Wright and Bill Ayers would have made.

Instead, the democrats went along, approving, approving and approving.

From Krauthammer:

Critics say: So what if Pelosi is a hypocrite? Her behavior doesn't change the truth about torture.

But it does. The fact that Pelosi (and her intelligence aide) and then-House Intelligence Committee Chairman Porter Goss and dozens of other members of Congress knew about the enhanced interrogation and said nothing, and did nothing to cut off the funding, tells us something very important.

Our jurisprudence has the "reasonable man" standard. A jury is asked to consider what a reasonable person would do under certain urgent circumstances.

On the morality of waterboarding and other "torture," Pelosi and other senior and expert members of Congress represented their colleagues, and indeed the entire American people, in rendering the reasonable person verdict. What did they do? They gave tacit approval. In fact, according to Goss, they offered encouragement. Given the existing circumstances, they clearly deemed the interrogations warranted.

Moreover, the circle of approval was wider than that. As Slate's Jacob Weisberg points out, those favoring harsh interrogation at the time included Alan Dershowitz, Mark Bowden and Newsweek's Jonathan Alter. In November 2001, Alter suggested we consider "transferring some suspects to our less squeamish allies" (i.e. those that torture). And, as Weisberg notes, these were just the liberals.

So what happened? The reason Pelosi raised no objection to waterboarding at the time, the reason the American people (who by 2004 knew what was going on) strongly re-elected the man who ordered these interrogations, is not because she and the rest of the American people suffered a years-long moral psychosis from which they have just now awoken. It is because at that time they were aware of the existing conditions -- our blindness to al-Qaeda's plans, the urgency of the threat, the magnitude of the suffering that might be caused by a second 9/11, the likelihood that the interrogation would extract intelligence that President Obama's own director of national intelligence now tells us was indeed "high-value information" -- and concluded that on balance it was a reasonable response to a terrible threat.

And they were right.

You can believe that Pelosi and the whole American public underwent a radical transformation from moral normality to complicity with war criminality back to normality. Or you can believe that their personalities and moral compasses have remained steady throughout the years, but changes in circumstances (threat, knowledge, imminence) alter the moral calculus attached to any interrogation technique.

You don't need a psychiatrist to tell you which of these theories is utterly fantastical.

I love the Krauthammer dead pan insight that blows most away... He is from the real school or conservatism that has seemed to leave the room of late.

Just a quick other note.  I remember RCP when it was a one page site.  Amazing how some sites have grown to such proportions.
