DN! US Hate Groups Up 34% Since 2000

Department of Homeland Security Chief Janet Napolitano has stated groups of extremists " .... too numerous to mention" have been soliciting returning veterans to carry out acts of domestic terrorism, saying the warning issued in the latest report, Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment , is consistent with previously issued reports.

An excerpt from the F.B.I. unclassified report dated July 7, 2008, contained in the Scope Focus of White Supremacy Recruitment of Military Personnel since 9/11, which states information was gathered beginning in October 2001, during the Republican Bush administration :

.... This assessment examines why white supremacist extremist groups have attempted to increase their recruitment of current and former US military personnel, what success their recruitment efforts have enjoyed, and what impact such recruitment has had on the white supremacist extremist movement. The identification of current and former members of the US Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard) in the extremist movement draws exclusively from FBI case files from October 2001 to May 2008. It is based on the assumption that military veterans involved in white supremacist extremism may exploit their accesses to restricted areas and intelligence or apply specialized training in weapons, tactics, and organizational skills to benefit the extremist movement.

This didn't make the nightly news, but was picked up by Rachel Maddow.  I haven't checked for any followup stories, but would be interested to know if anyone knows anything more.

Thanks for this.

It would be interesting to get statistics on this.  I would think for their recruiting to be successful, the contacted vet would already have had leanings towards extreme groups.  I think those guys can be found out before they are contacted.  I understand the reasoning of their suspicions.  After all you're dealing with a young man that has been trained to kill and some even get an adrenaline rush from it.  My fear is  that it starts bunching a whole group into this category.  All races serve in the US military, which also makes me wonder why only white extremism is mentioned here.

I read a report stating there was a run on the gun stores last week when Troy Davis was denied his appeal.  I only read the headline and do not know if the two events were connected.

Thanks for the report, Karen.  Reading it made me think of this timeless song:

From the Boston Globe online:

"A US Marine was arrested today at Logan International Airport after federal airport screeners discovered a gun, bomb-making materials and ammunition in his checked bag."

http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/04/us_marine_arres.html?s_campaign=8315

Might be worth following.

Also, I can't locate the original story, but there are links at the bottom of the following one, related to someone with extremist ties who was murdered - the story was featured on Rachel Maddow a month or two ago, but didn't get much play by the MSM:

http://www.bangordailynews.com/detail/102420.html

(I think that I posted the original to one of your stories, Karen, but I'm not certain.)

I don't know about the DHS report, but I know that there is way too much hatred-related violence - there are too many hate-crimes.

Clarification:

I am not saying or even implying that the Marine in the first story has any ties to extremist groups.  As I said, however, it's a story worth following.

Given the trends - given the way things are going - no one should be sleeping well.  There are domestic surveillance operations in full-swing against law-abiding, "good" Americans.  Based on personal experience, I can tell you that Americans of various races and persuasions, if you will, have been targeted and are being terrorized -- no exaggeration.  Who is behind these crimes/operations, we may never know.  The full extent of them?  We may never know. We certainly won't, if they aren't taken seriously.

These crimes (collectively) are an outrage, but then we know that outrageous things go on every day in all parts of the world.  Why should America be any different?  (I ask this last question with great sadness because, naively, I still want America to be different.  I still hope that America will seek to be different.)

The above link is a followup story on the Marine picked up (yesterday?).  The story will unfold, as Karen has said.  It's too soon to know the truth.
