Her mother has now confirmed to NBC Washington that Natasha Pettigrew died from her injuries sustained in that crash. She was a Green Party candidate for the U.S. Senate in Maryland and a law student.

When she was struck by the SUV the driver did not stop and continued to drive home and it was only after she stopped the car that she saw Ms. Pettigrew's bike still stuck under the wheels. The driver told police she thought she had hit a dog or a deer.

The driver then called police immediately, so they are not calling the accident a hit-and-run, said Maryland State Police Lt. Mark Darby.

No charges have been laid in the case at this time.

I cannot believe there has not been at least a small uproar concerning this accident.  Deers and dogs do not wear reflective clothing and people still manage to KNOW which of these creatures they hit.  How could this woman drive three or four miles without knowing she was dragging a large object?  Did she have her headlights on??? Check the cell phone records.  Check the husband and anyone else in the house.  Something is very wrong with the information in these articles.  There should definitely be some charges filed.

I have the same sentiments as you with regards to this incident. I personally believe that she needs to be checked for substance abuse. I am a 64 year old Black woman who grew up in the sixties during the civil rights movement. During that time, people were willing to publicly speak up and defend the rights of others.  It appears as though Black people have become very complacent. No one wants to take a stand and demand justice.
