NP Rank:
National Guard troops needed at border too
Pentagon officials and Homeland Security is at odds over a plan to send National Guard troops to the U.S. Mexico border, even as the President is pledging to support security there. President Obama spoke at the White House on Wednesday with Mexican President, Felipe Calderon, saying that the U.S. is committed to standing with Mexico against the drug cartels. The President said, "as your partner, we'll give you the support to persist, and adding that through increased law enforcement on the U.S. side of the border. "We're putting pressure on those who traffic in drugs, guns and people.
Federal authorization for deploying up to 17,000 National Guard Troops was the response to the Gulf oil spill, fueling the disagreement over sending the National Guards to the border. The costs, are likely to be accepted by oil giant BP PLC, which leased the offshore drilling rig Deep water Horizon. The oil spill border state senators say they need help too.
White House spokesman, Nick Shapiro said "The President is firmly committed to ensuring that our Southwest border is secure", "The Administration continues to evaluate additional law enforcement options as well as the use of the National Guard, as needed along the southwest border".

Protecting our borders at home is a much better use of the National Guard than sending them to deployments in the Middle East.
