NATO Summit Protests: Police Clash With Protesters in Strasbourg

The NATO summit in Strasbourg is the latest protest to escalate into a clash between police and protesters. Police fired tear gas to control a crowd that was growing increasingly out of control.
Anti-NATO protesters lit fires and smashed public property as 25,000 police attempted to keep the peace.
Groups of youths, many wearing hoods or scarves, walked through a suburb of the city carrying banners saying: "Stop repression in London and Strasbourg".
Bus stops and vehicles were vandalised, shop windows smashed and a barricade put up on one street.
One protester rammed a pole through the front window of a police vehicle.
A passenger in the car appeared to be holding a handgun as it quickly reversed.
World leaders arrive Friday for the NATO summit, which will also mark the 60th anniversary of the formation of NATO. France recently announced plans to increase its involvement with the alliance after decades of limited interactions.

I took these photos at the May 17, 2008 protest against the NATO base in Betera, Spain. Approximately 100 people participated and demanded that the base, which for years had been unused by the Spanish government, be converted into a public park and natural wildlife sanctuary.
