Nato head Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has warned that walking away from the alliance's mission in Afghanistan would have a "devastating" effect.

Speaking in London, the Nato secretary-general said failure would give free run to al-Qaeda.

His comments come as Afghanistan suffers a spike in violence ahead of elections on 20 August.

Public opinion must be a bit worrying in United Kingdom and now the propaganda masters are trying to sway things to their path. Of course getting rid of the Taliban is the only way to get an assemblance of peace in the area. But I have doubts that such action will stop al-Qaeda as their real HQ is in Saudi Arabia where they are funded.

Good story

NATO needs 500,000 men in Afghanistan to win

We need to empower the people of Afghanistan.  This can only be done by training their security forces (police and army) to take care of things on their own.

Reconstruction and building strong institutions to govern the country are needed, whatever form they may take.

What business Nato has in Afghanistan? Taliban cannot invade U.S or Europe. There is something fishy.

Oily or gassy more likely. The question is are al-Qaeda and the Taliban the same thing? I say no just allied to the same cause but more interested in owning the whole of Afghanistan.

Al-Qaeda are reported to be in Pakistan so its pointless to expect Nato to wipe out al-Qaeda. So the war on terror is not really being fought in Afghanistan but in Pakistan.   But by destroying the Taliban it makes it harder for al-Qaeda to re-establish a base in Afghanistan.
