Washington, DC – Saturday, the United States Naval Observatory (USNO) held its first open house since May 2001. The USNO shares grounds at Observatory Circle with the official residence and office of the Vice-President of the United States.

2009 has been declared the International Year of Astronomy (IYA) by UNESCO and the International Astronomical Union. This year celebrates the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first use of a telescope. The open house was part of this IYA 2009.

The sky was clear and hundreds of visitors endured the line to view Saturn and four of its moons via the 12 inch telescope. On the adjacent grounds, amateur astronomers setup many telescopes for the public to view both the night and day skies.
