My ex-husband was on the Guadalcanal before they retired it. He was in Derest Storm back in 1992. He alos was a flight deck director for some years. I would hear of the stories of how the long days when they would go out and do work ups. Days of 24/7 trainnig so I'm not surprized that this happened only that it happened to someone with so much experience. Night ops or really hard even for the pilot.

A sailor from Detroit, Michgan was killed when he was struck by a plane on the flight deck of a Norfolk-based aircraft carrier.

The Navy says the incident happened at 8:16 p.m. Saturday aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, which is conducting training exercises off the coast of North Carolina.

Monday afternoon, the Navy released the sailor's name. He's Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Second Class Petty Officer Robert Lemar Robinson, who was 31 years old.

Navy officials tell WVEC.com that Robinson enlisted in the Navy in September 1998.

Petty Officer Robinson was an aircraft director in USS Eisenhower's Air Department and had been assigned to the ship since January 2008.
