My ex-husband was on the Guadalcanal before they retired it. He was in Derest Storm back in 1992. He alos was a flight deck director for some years. I would hear of the stories of how the long days when they would go out and do work ups. Days of 24/7 trainnig so I'm not surprized that this happened only that it happened to someone with so much experience. Night ops or really hard even for the pilot.
