Naxalites have struck again. This time killing 16 people including seven children all in the age group of 10-15 years. The incident occurred in Amosi Bahiar village of Khagaria district in North Bihar on late Thursday night IST.

The naxalites tied up the hands and legs of the victims before shooting them at very close range. Police said that control over disputed cultivable land was at the center of killing. Bihar's Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Neelmani said that a massive combing operation for the naxals has been launched. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has assured supplementing additional forces to aid the operation. He announced a financial relief of INR 1,50,000 for the family members of those killed.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Ajay Pandey said, “Over 100 Maoists armed with automatic weapons attacked Amausi village and shot dead 16 villagers, including five children.”

Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi, accompanied by Land and Revenue minister Narendra Narayan Yadav and Director General of Police Anand Shankar later visited the spot.

Bihar has seen a lot of bloodshed due to Maoist terror in the past. This is the first major Maoist attack in the state for some time. Maoist terrorists have killed more than 6,000 people in the last 20-years all over India for what they call a fight for a communist state. The Maoists say they are fighting for the rights of the poor and landless. The victims in the latest case belonged to backward castes and this shadows the naxal claim of being friend of poor and socially deprived.  Khagaria and nearby districts are already facing the warth of flood and such incidents can only worsen the situation and aggravate the human suffering.

Latest Update:

Bihar Police today arrested the alleged "mastermind" in the Khagaria carnage along with 6 accomplices. These are 7 out of 37 people named in the FIR lodged in the case.

“We have arrested P. Mahto alias Upendra Mahto who masterminded the assault and six of his accomplices. The police have got major clues on the basis of his interrogation,” Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) Neelmani said in Patna.

Meanwhile police fearing retaliation have beefed up the security in the area. This small village and nearby areas today look like a police camp, full of commandos of the state police and the Central Reserve Police Force. Raids are being conducted on the suspected hideouts of the naxalites. Police are also looking for a Panchayat clerk and an Additional District Magistrate-rank official suspected to have sided with the members of a caste and incited them to capture the land.

Khagaria District's Suprientendent of Police (SP) SP Indranand Mishra and Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Ajay Kumar Pandey have been suspended by Bihar Chief Minster, Nitish Kumar on charges of dereliction of duty, serious lapses and failure to reach the spot immediately after the incident. Anusuiya Ramsingh, Additional SP of Aurangabad has been asked to take over the charge of Khagaria SP while Manoj Kumar Tiwary, Nalanda Deputy SP has been asked to join as the SDPO with immediate effect.

It's really sad that such a barbaric incident happened on the International Peace Day! Such a violent incident coincides the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi! Such criminals needs to be dealt with in toughest way possible. May the departed souls find peace.
