NP Rank:
Naxalite terrorists hold India to ransom
The concerns raised by various reports earlier seemed to have not made any impact on the authorities in India who still talk about going soft on the Maoist terrorists (Naxalites) in India. The “Red-Corridor” as it is (in)famously known, stretches over multiple states in India. These terrorists who call themselves the voice of the poor and oppressed have been on an overdrive in the past few months killing hundreds of civilians and security personnel. In the latest incident they hijacked a passenger train thereby holding the whole nation to ransom. The train in question is arguably the most coveted train in India, the Rajdhani Express.
The train – one of India’s fastest, swankiest passenger trains – had been hijacked by at least 300 ax- and sword-wielding Maoist rebels Tuesday morning as it sped through West Bengal on its way from the eastern state of Orissa toward the Indian capital. After a five-hour drama, during which the driver was taken hostage and passengers were forced off the train and into the jungle, the rebels surrendered. No one was hurt.
While people are regularly killed and looted by these criminals, the most shocking element of the whole episode is the clout and sympathy they find in political and so-called “intellectual” groups. While the spate of violence and crime goes unabated after a lot of dilly-dally the central government recently gave a go ahead to carry out operations against the Naxalites. Though the level of commitment from the various political parties still seems varied and casts doubts on the intentions.
In the recent Rajdhani express incident the police FIR lodged tells a story in itself.
In what is being seen as a move to shield the Maoists, there is no mention of the Maoists or even the People's Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCPA)in the FIR that was lodged against the hijackers of the Rajdhani Express by the Railway authorities, in the Rajdhani hostage case.Questions are now being raised over why Mamata Banerjee's railways ministry has not mentioned the PCPA or the Maoists' in the FIR.
This new information comes to light despite the Maoists and the PCPA claiming responsibility for the hijack of the Rajdhani.
While the political parties exchange allegations over support to naxalities, security of the hapless passengers remains at stake. Everyday millions of Indians commute on the rail network.
Although some known faces of the People's Committee Against Police Atrocities, including Santosh Patra, were among the crowd, a railway official was quoted by sources saying "Who will identify them? We do not know any of them?"
Though later on Thursday evening the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), in what seemed to be a “damage-control” exercise filed a FIR naming naxals as the perperators.
"When the police forces were heading towards the train on October 27 they were fired upon by the People's Committee Against Political Atrocities(PCPA) and Maoists. An FIR has been lodged against them for attacking the police and attempting to prevent them from doing their lawful duty," a senior police officer told PTI.
In an earlier revelation many national newspapers carried the news of the amount of fund and source of funds that these Naxalities have in their kitty. The sources peg the value of the “business” at INR 1,500- crores which is raised mainly through mafia style extortions especially from the corporates operating mines and related industries in the naxal belt.
Naxalism, which started off as a people's movement, has now become a nearly Rs 1500 crore organised extortion business in the form of 'levy', police and central security officials said.CPI (Maoist) and especially its splinter groups, which extort the money hardly pump it back for running the movement but instead use it to maintain luxurious lifestyles for their masters, the officials said.
The report also exposed the way these militants are raising funds from the hapless industrialist in these areas. This has in many cases also led industries to shut down operations after some of the employees were abducted or killed. The area is widely under developed and poor people get lured to join the “movement” with hope of getting “social justice” and as reports indicate “wages” for being part of the gang.
If a conservative estimate is taken of the income generated from 'levy' in the seven most Naxal-infested states -- Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar, West Bengal and Maharashtra -- security agencies feel the collection from these areas, which are commonly referred to as 'red corridor', amount to nearly Rs 1,500 crore. The Naxals have even come out with a card, recovered by forces, which clearly shows the exact amount of 'levy' to be paid by contractors, petrol pump owners and land owners.
It usually ranges from 10 per cent of the project cost for those making unpaved roads to five per cent for small bridges and others.
Such militants are also encouraging production of narcotics to fund their groups. While they lead a lavish life from the funds they are forcing common people to death traps.
"The chiefs lead a luxurious life with all modern facilities. Though, they forcibly recruit children in their cadre, their own kids study in good public schools," officials said. The Naxals also encourage local villagers to undertake opium cultivation, just like insurgents in Northeast states.
Of the total 1.07 lakh kg of ganja or marijuana seized in the country in 2007, heavy quantity of it was from Nagaland (15,489 kg), Madhya Pradesh (14,815 kg), Maharashtra (12,551 kg), Chhattisgarh (7,470 kg) and Andhra Pradesh (7,059 kg).
The naxalities have also been targeting banks to fund their luxuries.
After the recent theft of Rs 5 crore from a bank in Jharkhand, the state police are all set to work out a strategy to prevent Naxals from targeting banks in several parts of the state.Sources in the police said the theft in Jharkhand was a part of Communist Party of India (Maoists)’s decision to target bank money. “In November 2007, the central committee of the CPI(M) had asked its members to ensure that substantial percentage of tax was collected from banks. The top leadership of the party is of the view that levy should not come only from old sources like Gram Pradhans and contractors in the Naxal-affected areas,” a source said. Naxals who operate at the ground level have been told to target banks in Uttar Pradesh too, he added.
In a report published by the BBC the level of sophistication and organization of these terrorists is clearly visible. The details were revealed when BBC landed up with a copy of the "preliminary interrogation report" of Narla Ravi Sharma, a senior Naxalite leader who was arrested a fortnight ago by the security forces.
He is quoted as saying that the annual expenditure incurred by the Maoists in the Bihar-Jharkhand region is around $200,000.The Maoist leader said that all their members were paid monthly "wages", though he refused to divulge how much.
Mr Sharma was arrested in mid-October along with his wife, Anuradha, from the forests near Hazaribagh town in Jharkhand.
His revelations about corporate funding of Maoists has prompted police and intelligence officials to suggest that the massive military effort planned against the rebels will not yield the desired results unless their "finance line" is choked .
This is not the first time Indian firms doing business in rebel-dominated areas have been accused of funding the rebels.
In the 1980s and 1990s big tea and oil companies were accused of regularly giving funds to the separatist United Liberation Front of Assam and the National Democratic Front of Bodoland in the north-east.
Corporates generally pay up to avoid disruption or abductions - and business leaders say that the government should not punish them unless they can provide security to companies operating in Maoist-affected areas.

How is such a posh train hijacked without knowledge of officials?
From what I read about the train on wikipedia and some sources they are escorted by commando forces also.
Scary!

Ninja,
The policy of security escort for trains (especially "VIP" trains like the Rajdhani Exp.) is old but with change in ministers at the Center these policies also change.
Security is basically a state matter and these belts are known for naxal infiltration. Railways has its own set of security personnel viz. Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF, who are considered para-military and more sophisticated forces) who usually escort these trains in conjunction with personnel from State police appointed Govt. Railway Police (GRP) but its a shame that "politics" decided which stretch of the route becomes "safe" and "unsafe" with change in ministers and govt.

This mentality and this use of violence without reason or limit have been part of the Bolshevism since its beginnings under VI Lenin.
And, the "treason" of intellectuals in this regard has been part of this for more than two hundred years. It began during the French Revolution.
There is even a book called, The Treason of the Intellectuals, about this very topic. Much of what we see even here from a certain element of the left, the character assassination of Sarah Palin, for example, the regard of anything the comes out of the republican party, FOX News, any Christian group, capitalism, or military intervention, as being basically evil, is part of that.
It is a prologue for total cynicism and complete Machiavellianism of "Red Fascism".
Solzhenitsyn wrote about this. On TV in an interview, he said that the West had this attitude of thinking that communism was just another form of government.
Solzhenitsyn said to read Dostoyevsky's The Possessed to understand the evil here better. I have yet to finish the book, but, from what I have read so far, I agree.

While respecting your opinions I beg to differ with you.Voilence is an integral part of history of mankind. You will find ample examples in scriptures.Voilence is of two varities, sensible and senseless.State aided and abetted voilence has been senseless and those who want to overthrow an existing system, corrupt and sham from begining to end, ruthless and oppressive in highest degrees need voilent methods.
If Bolshevism was not another form of government, then it was what?Secondly,US and West have accepted military rulers, junta and dictators like Pinochet,Idi Amin,Suharto and Basista, that's not the end of list,no media compaign was launched against such evil(pious if were suitable to US and West economic and strategic interests)forces.
Roy, what is the opinion of that author of that book which you have not finished hitherto about Middle-eastern Monarchs,Husni Mubarak of Egypt and Zionists?
In a bloody revolution excesses have been committed, but out of necessity not ultimate choice.
While condemning voilence of any variety, objectivity must not be lost sight of.Character assassination is better than assassination of Che Guevara,Patrice Lumumba, salvador allende and attempts on life of Muammar Ghadafi,Fidel castro. Is CIA a form of government we must accept without raising questions?

Portraying Maoists as terrorists is travesty of truth, truth which gutter Indian media, rarely prints.Train was stopped,a common expression of anger which we witness in India every now and then.Burning of trains, public transport vehicles damaging public property is not uncommon in India,60 plus year old troddling democracy. To be more exact anarchy ratified through ballot box.
The train in question was not hijacked as reported by Indian media.Maoists are neither terrorists nor extortionists. They have never killed innocent persons, their targets are most brutal force, the Indian Police Force whose record of crimes,in the opinion of a High Court Judge some 5 decades back, comes no where close to an organized gang of criminals.the powerful land mafia dons who forcibly evict low caste Hindus from their lands, the police informers and multi-national robber barons(blood sucking multinational corporations).None of them is innocent.
The biggest threat to Indian democracy is not these revolutionaries who are enemy of the peoples' enemies, but the corrupt political class.

Lets examine the "enlightening" points one by one:

To call such criminals, revolutionary itself is like defaming the word revolution but as always some even call Taliban and LeTs of the world as heroes and revolutionaries!

Revolutionaries have been called criminals, terrorists by ruling elites at every point of time in history.Bhagat Singh was a terrorists in British court and sent to gallows. But was he a terrorist?A great armed revolutionary, wasn't he?
Maoists are whose creation and who supports them?Do you think Maoist in Nepal were terrorists, and if so why they are part of governing coalition?
Why our government wants to talk to them with certain conditions?Does an elected government talks to criminals and extortionists?Media which is owned by big industrial houses is putting all pressure on the government to crush this movement by force. But government knows the ramifications of such a risky venture.
Multi-national corporations want more and more lands for SEZs and aboriginals and tribals can be displaced with least resistance and deploying brutal police force.Nandigram happened because of wrong policies of CPI(M).
Burning public property can not be justified. But it is frequent and if you read newspapers you must be coming across such news.Even if a cyclist is killed in a road accident, the angry mob burns trucks and buses and blocks the highway for hours. If we bury our heads in sand and forget the difference between seen and seing like an ostrich it doesn't mean that it is not happening.
When Maoists stop a train it is headline story in a gutter newspaper, when angry mobs stop trains no such headline in so-called mainstream media.I am not justifying this act either by angry mob or Maoists. What I find disgusting is double standards.
I am expressing my views as freely as you are, both as a citizens of India .This forum is for expressing opinion and not propaganda.Opinion of a leftist is propaganda;and that of a rightist gospel. Two yardsticks.
That judgement about police force is still qouted whenever there is a discussion on police reforms in India.

Bhagat Singh never killed fellow Indian or asked for ransom for leading a luxurious life. Did he? Its more like what an Osama of the world would do!

Living in jungles, always on a run for protection of their lives and alway vulnrable to face bullets of brutal forces is luxury,if at all, then you are absolutely all right.
Maoists have never planted boms outside places of worship, opened indiscriminate firing on a crowd in a mall or picture hall, stations or markets. When they blew up Coca-Cola factory they asked the present staff to leave the premises. They blow up stations but before that they get it vacated.Such is their concern for the lives of innocent men and women and children .
They kill their ruthless enemies with equal ruthlessness. And whom they perceive their enemies is well known-the state and its cruel forces, the police, politicians and police informers. The 16 men gunned down in Bihar were infomers to police and big landlords.
Osama Bin Laden, indoctrinated by CIA,ISI of Pakistan and Saudi Intelligence came from a richest family of Saudi Arabia. It was his obsession with progressive forces which brought him to Afghanistan to establish a regime in the name of Islam, which was any thing but Islamic. His world view was myopic and any one who disagreed with him was an enemy and deserved death penalty.Osama was blue-eyed boy of CIA,he was most wanted terrorist by US administration and at the same time CIA officials were in regular touch with him when he was hospitalised in UAE.

I never knew that blowing the Coca-Cola factory provided jobs to all the jobless and poor in the area (maybe clearing the debris was there idea of jobs and enriching the poor).
Concern for life!! Oh yea! Blown tracks and roadways facilitate quick transport of patients and elderly as well add to infrastructure of a nation which is still crawling in this field.
Commie propaganda has always been on these lines as portrayed by your statements and as always communist ruled states have been at the bottom of the development ladder.
Violence is unacceptable in a developed society but commies will never understand such things.
at 00:24 on November 1st, 2009
What about Bihar and Uttar Pradesh? Are they communist ruled states?
Every revolutionary movement has first to paralyse a goverment which is for the rich, weaken its armed wings, police(robbers and rapists and murderers in uniform) before overthrowing the government.
Go through WB projections for India 2015.25% population will live below poverty line on less than 1.25 us$ a day.(This is not a typical commie propaganda). Please read DNA,31/10/09:FIR lodged against 5 Police Officers for looting families.DNA is not a communists' newspaper. The news is about 5 innocents.
Constructions of Dams have displaced millions and millions, entire villages submerged in water and not only they had to leave their homes but lost all means of livelyhood.Under RTI act please get the figures.Right information commissioner's office is not propganda secretariat of Commies.
Of course inconvinience is caused to public in an armed revolution,it is caused even by Strikes and Bandhs,do you think striking doctors provide employment to cab drivers to take the patients to quacks, who too earn. That could be your logic.
at 08:41 on November 1st, 2009
Bihar-UP: Nopes they are/were ruled by the so called= "leaders of the poor" and "anti-manuwadi" forces but that infact proves my point; the states were tore apart by the so called leaders of the poor. Bihar--> Naxals ruined the agriculture for a number of years and were on a blood bathed killing spree until they had a stiff challenge from citizens and armed forces.....result--today they have been pushed to the northers districts adjoining porous Nepal border (which everyone knows has been now ruined by Maoist govt.). Why don't we see any more Maoist "justice" and "courts" in middle Bihar?? Has "social justice" been met? No!! Its cause the poor laborers realized that they were just losing jobs while migrating labor from terror torn northern districts were taking up their jobs with the farmers.
"Go through WB projections for India 2015.25% population will live below poverty line" You are again proving my point....years of Communist govt. has ruined the state and the maoists are just speeding up the ultimate disaster. "FIR lodged against 5 Police Officers for looting families."--Are you even serious?? I can as well lodge a couple of FIRs against someone to drive a propaganda.
Dams: How do you provide electricity and water to the ever growing population?? Surely human displacement is a big issue and needs "humane" handling but killing and bloodbath by the maoists is no solution and certainly not "humane" either.
Striking doctors: And who propagates the "philosophy" of strikes? :)
at 17:47 on November 1st, 2009
You beguile answers. How many states have been ruled by communists?and for how long?
Electricity:don't you know the gap between generation and demand? The hours electricity is provided for in villages of number of states.900,000 thousand yearly deaths due to water related diseases. How many more dams are needed to displace and deny all means of livelihood to millions and millions.Sixty plus years have elapsed and still women in Madhya Pradesh,Gunjrat have to walk miles and miles to fetch water.I guess you beleive that whatever highlights the plight of poors, including their armed resistance, is propoganda.

So what makes these guys worse than the Hindu Brahmins whose corruption and cronyism has been running rampant for years? When you've been amicably tolerating the Sheriff of Nottingham and Prince John for years, you have to expect Robin Hood and the Magna Carta crew to come to town sooner or later.
