The BBC have got a hold of a set of shocking figures this morning through the freedom of information act and it shows that nearly 500 under eighteen year olds in Scotland have been charged with rape.

The figures also show that nineteen of these charges were brought against children under 10-year olds.

Also a total of 755 charges were brought against under 18s for indecency or sexual offences last year.

In 2007/8 police or courts dealt with 2,088 sexual offences by under 18s, including 244 cases involving pre-teenage children.

Under Scottish law of criminal responsibility is currently aged eight, compared with the age of 10 under English law.

What a horrible set of figures though I must admit mankind stopped shocking me years ago.

Police in Scotland have brought almost 500 rape charges against children and teenagers under the age of 18 in the past five years.

Nineteen of these charges were brought against eight, nine or 10-year olds.

During the same period, three out of four specialist residential units treating sexually aggressive young people have closed.

The figures were obtained under the Freedom of Information Act as part of a BBC Scotland investigation.

A total of 755 charges were brought against under 18s for indecency or sexual offences last year.

Another case, not included in that total, involved a four-year-old in the Grampian area reported for indecent assault.

Hard to believe that kids under 10 would engage in this.  Do you have any idea why kids would act out that way?

Therse findings are part of a BBC Scotland TV program being shown here called 'The Dark Side of Teenage Sex'.

The findings show that the 7 out of 10 children who carry out serious abuse had been abused themselves.

In the show, one young man, who was convicted of two counts of attempted rape carried out when he was 11 and 14, had been been sent to a specialist school which claimed it offered treatment.

He said: "No help was offered, no help was given. It was just another place for me to stay."

Dr Eileen Vizard NSPCC said "There's a great deal of evidence to show that the children who are at the highest risk start earlier in childhood - really early - ie under six or seven with worrying behaviours - that if they don't get help because services have been closed, the behaviours are likely to escalate and worsen"

Once you have teen's having sex with pre-teens, you end up with a self-perpetual cycle.

When the pre-teens become teenagers, they will tend to find pre-teens to play with...

And from mudricky's coment, the mental health system isn't doing the work on this that it should be doing for these kids. Again, it perpetuates the cycle if the cycle isn't broken in the beganing.

Yes these numbers are shocking, I'm curious as to how many are repeat offenders?

And what about the many rapes where people aren't charged perhaps due to lack of evidence, loss of paperwork etc.
