The Nepali Maoists have been the strongest force at the Constituent Assembly but failed to have their candidate elected as the First President of Nepal. Now, the newly elected President Ram Baran Yadav - from the Nepali Congress Party - has given them a seven day deadline to form a government. Last week Maoists declined to form a government and created a local political crisis. In the past, they asked for the end of minor political party alliances, time to draft a political programme and a vote of confidence for a two year government. If Maoists are unable to get the Premiership, there are other options to fill in the post.  Former Prime Minister and leader of the Nepali Congress Party Girija Prasad Koirala might return to power.

Deadline set for Maoists to form cabinet

Nepal's new President Ram Baran Yadav has called on the former Maoist rebels to form the country's new government within seven days.

The Maoists have been given a deadline to form an administration, but the former guerrillas have rejected the call and accused the president of overstepping his powers.

The Maoists secured 226 seats in Constituent Assembly this spring but fell 75 seats short of a majority in the 601-seat assembly.

Nepal was plunged into political crisis last week when the Maoists declared they would not form the first post-royal government after their candidate was defeated by rival Nepali Congress Party's candidate.

Political wrangling has left Nepal without a formal government since it became a republic in late May.

Nepal's 240-year-old monarchy came to an after the Constituent Assembly declared the country a federal democratic republic, following the April elections.

Wow!  Maoists eh?  Did they campaign on a platform of bringing back that good ol' Cultural Revoltion?  What percentage of the Nepalese people did they promise to exterminate once in power?
