Michigan State Police confirmed that the remains of a young girl discovered last Thursday, are indeed those of Nevaeh Buchanan, the 5-year-old girl who had been missing from Monroe since May 24th.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office made the announcement on Tuesday after a crime lab verified her identity using DNA testing.

The cause of Buchanan's death has not been released.

The police's Northville crime lab used DNA to verify that the remains were indeed those of Nevaeh, who disappeared May 24 from outside of her Monroe apartment complex.

The announcement ends five days of speculation, during which law-enforcement agents and Nevaeh's family acknowledged they were looking for the girl's killer, while at the same time holding out hope that the remains proved to be someone else.

Police had previously named George Kennedy, 39, and Roy Smith, 48 as persons of interest in the case but no new charges have been laid.

Kennedy and Smith are both registered sex offenders and have been "sent back to prison to finish their original sentences", according to the Michigan Department of Corrections.
