Delhi CM gives deadline to BRT officials

The launch of Bus Rapid Transport Corridor in New Delhi, the capital city of India, was to mark the advent of New Delhi's new transport chapter and create time-saving smooth passage of traffic in people's lives. However, amidst the already existing basic chaos in infrastructure, it has only added fuel to fire, read traffic jams, and made an intolerable difference which may not easily vanish the way it came.

The chief minister, Ms. Shiela Dikshit has already warned the administrators of the BRT including a panel of reputed citizens from all walks of life that if the system did not function in the desired manner smoothly, it would be removed totally from the infrastructure even it meant a loss of 240 crore rupees.

Earlier on, the Metro rail system had been hailed the world over as a stupendous achievement of Ms. Dikshit and her team which included G. Sridharan. It did make a marvellous and welcome change in people's daily routines even if caused great trouble while construction, for the locals. Nonetheless, people are now benefiting greatly and it is making their movement across the state more bearable and comfortable.

However, it does not reflect the same with the BRT. The metro rail keeps getting affected by the traffic manners of the locals, which includes spitting in trains and defecating on rail lines. The same applies to the BRT. The BRT is supposed to have separate lanes for pedestrians, buses, cars etc but people driving or walking simply do not bother to follow basic rules in traffic management. It will be a while before people actually realise the benefits and do not cross over from one lane to another at will. Only strict disciplinary action against defaulters will help either the project being implemented in totality or getting removed in whole as suggested by the chief minister.

While there is no doubt that Delhi suffers from a traffic problem, in my experience drivers were unexpectedly calm and patient. I never witnessed any fights or quarrels on the streets of Delhi. I actually want to congratulate them. In many other parts of the world this chaos would be taken with much more nerves, yelling and shouting...
