Mayor Gregor Robertson hit the ground running on his first day as mayor of Vancouver with a press conference at City Hall this morning where he announced the creation of a “Homeless Emergency Action Team (HEAT). The team, he said, will be responsible for providing immediate actions that the city can take to help people off the street and into a safe environment over the next 90 days. Members include Janice Abbott, Executive Director of Atira Women’s Resource Society, Jim Chu, Vancouver Police Chief, David Eby, Executive Director of the BC Civil Liberties Association and Patrick Stewart, Chair of the Aboriginal Homelessness Steering Committee. Other members are listed at the end of this article.

“Urgency is what this is all about,” he said at a press conference today in which he announced a 90 day plan to get the estimated thousand people sleeping on the streets of Vancouver into shelters.  You can read the rest of this article on The Vancouver Observer.

Another urgency we need around here is more affordable housing.

Not a single day passes without news on homelessness in the media. For over a year I have been actively researching on solutions for homelessness and low-cost housing and came out with some amazing facts and concepts. The problem I am finding now is, “if you do not have a political connection you find it extremely difficult to share your ideas”. It seems that the present return on investment from government is awkwardly mismatched as alternative building methods are not being looked into.

I am looking forward to invitations from concerned organizations, real estate builders, municipalities and governments to sharing these ideas and solutions which will provide affordable low-cost (in building, operating and maintaining) solution for shelters and will create job opportunities for the homeless and low-income individuals and families. These meetings can be during working hours in weekdays but preferably be after work or weekends.

I will wait for positive responses.

Thanks
