A group of pilots has formed the Pilots and Paws Gulf Coast Rescue Flyaway, an organization comprised of volunteers who aim to help abandoned foreclosure pets in New Orleans, Louisiana and in surrounding areas. With the help of the program, pilots offer their planes in transporting abandoned pets to new homes.
A big number of families in the city have lost their homes through foreclosures, with most of them forced to give up or leave their pets behind once their dwellings end up as foreclosed residential homes for sale. With the oil spill disaster and the remnants of the impact of Hurricane Katrina still haunting most of the city's neighborhoods, local animal rescuers reported that abandoned cats and dogs continue to increase in number in the area.
