New border rules come into effect today for people travelling between the United States and Canada, though guards will be fairly relaxed during the summer travel months.

Border officials say they will give people time to adjust to the new rules, which require citizens travelling to have a passport or new alternative form of ID such as the fast pass or nexus card.

The American border tightens today – sort of.

Despite new documentation requirements coming into effect today, Canadians will still be allowed across the U.S. border without a passport or enhanced driver's licence during this summer travel season.

WHAT ID YOU CAN USE

PASSPORTS:

Over half of Canadians already have one. Adult passports cost $87. Applications take two to four weeks to process.

FAST CARDS:

Commercial drivers can apply to the Free and Secure Trade program, designed to expedite trade of low-risk goods.

U.S. PASSPORT CARDS:

Designed for American residents of border communities, the passport card is cheaper than a full passport.

SECURE CERTIFICATE OF INDIAN STATUS:

A heavy Canadian lobby effort convinced U.S. officials to add status cards to the list of acceptable border documents.

NEXUS CARDS:

They are available to citizens and permanent residents of Canada or the U.S. who have lived continuously in one of these countries for the past three years. The cards allow access to special lanes at road crossings.

In related news, Canadian Border Services Agency guards left their posts in a first nation that straddles both the Canadian and US border after violence threatened to break out. Mohawk Warriors warned of confrontations with guards over new rules which allow the guards to carry guns, a move that is highly contested on the reserve.

After a night of negotiations with officials from the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne about the contentious plan to arm border guards, the post was abandoned, Grand Chief Tim Thompson said in a statement.

No kidding!  This sucks big time, no matter how ya slice it!

Yesterday's headline at the BuffaloNews read "Starting tomorrow think of Canada as a foreign country."

Hmph!  ಠ_ಠ

To bad it has come to that. Many hoped that North America could evolve as well as the EU did. I suppose not.

I've had a passport since I was 2 years old.  Since I've done a lot of travelling through Europe and the Carribean, it's always up to date.  I've crossed the US/Canada border 6 times in the past 6 months and always use my passport.  No problem.
