New Speaker of the House of Commons

Conservative MP John Bercow is now the new Speaker of the House of Commons.

Mr Bercow won the support of over 50% of the House with 322 votes compared to his nearest rival Sir George Young who won 271.

Former frontrunner Mrs Beckett, deputy Speaker Sir Alan Hazelhurst and Lib Dem Sir Alan Beith all dropped out of the race in the second round.

Ann Widdecombe was eliminated in the second round after receiving the lowest number of votes - 30.
