As the people around the world were wishing Happy New Year to their friends, the US administration, which claims to be a friend of Pakistani rulers, gave a bloody New Year gift to people of Pakistan.
Two CIA-operated drones Thursday attacked Karikot village in South Waziristan tribal district of Pakistan killing four people and injuring scores of others. According to residents of Laman village near Karikot town, eight kilometres south of Wana, headquarters of militancy-torn South Waziristan, six drones were flying over the town during the attack. They said the drones fired three Hellfire missiles on a car in which some Turkmen fighters were trying to escape after firing missiles towards the spy planes.
The residents said the militants fired a missile at one of the drones flying over the town at a low altitude. "Soon after firing a missile towards the drone, the militants sat in a car and were about to escape when their car was hit by a spy plane," a resident of Karikot village said.
Soon after the missile attack, a large number of tribal militants reached the scene and cordoned off site of the attack. They retrieved the bodies of the slain suspected militants charred being recognition. "Their bodies were reduced to pieces and were badly burnt," claimed a tribesman who saw the victims.
A militant commander, who wished not to be named, rejected reports of the killing of foreigners in the missile attack. "As usual, again they killed innocent people. We will definitely avenge the killing. We are dead sure that our government is equally involved in the killing of our people," the militant commander said.
A government official stationed at Wana claimed on condition of anonymity that all the four people killed in the attack were foreigners. "We have learnt from our local sources that all the four victims of the missile attack were foreign militants," claimed the official, adding that the government officials could not visit the area because of militant backlash.
The official admitted that six US drones had been flying over various villages inhabited by the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe. "It seems they modified the drones as they are large in size and almost noiseless," the official added.
"The attack on the first day of the New Year shows the US will continue its never-ending missile strikes on our villages," remarked a tribal journalist based in Wana. "People kept looking towards the sky in utter helplessness as the drones hovered over them like birds."
