The New Years Honours list is out with lots of new Sirs, Ladies, OBEs, MBEs, CBEs and the rest being handed out.

Sports stars feature heavily with cyclist Chris Hoy getting a knighthood and Lewis Hamilton being made a Member of the British Empire (MBE).

Terry Pratchett the fantasy writer gets a knighthood and rock god Robert Plant gets a CBE.

Full List of New Years Honours

Olympians Chris Hoy and Rebecca Adlington and driver Lewis Hamilton have rounded off an exceptional year for UK sport with New Year Honours.

Cyclist Hoy is knighted after three Beijing golds and double gold-winning swimmer Adlington becomes an OBE. F1 champion Hamilton is made an MBE.

The new sirs also include fantasy author Terry Pratchett, while rock star Robert Plant becomes a CBE.

As is usual with orders of the realm, I don't care particularly, but I'm pleased that Plant got some recognition for his work.

This was taken on 16th October 2008, the day of the Beijing Olympic/Paralympic GB team's parade through London. The day began at Guildhall in the City of London where the athletes had a celebratory breakfast before the parade. I was one of the few non-athletes to attend the Guildhall celebration and ride on the floats through London to Trafalgar Square.
