Millions of people across the world rang in the new year last night, and fireworks tended to be the celebration of choice for most cities, large and small.

Sydney, Australia and Auckland, New Zealand were two of the largest population centers to celebrate new years, with gigantic fireworks displays set for their capital cities.

From Sydney to New York and Auckland to London, revellers greeted 2009 with pyrotechnic shows and street parties.

Massive crowds greeted the fireworks in New York, London, Paris and other cities too numerous to name. People in the UK braved freezing temperatures and were rewarded with a 12-minute fireworks display in London, England.

Massive crowds in New York City, Europe and across Asia welcomed 2009 with displays of fireworks and large celebrations.
Those brave enough to withstand the freezing conditions in central London were rewarded with a 12-minute fireworks display on the banks of the River Thames, while in even colder Edinburgh some 100,000 simultaneously sang Robert Burns's poem Auld Lang Syne to welcome in 2009.

Meanwhile, poor weather and fog postponed the fireworks displays in Baltimore and Boston, with both being rescheduled to later today. Somehow I don't think it will be quite the same.

Baltimore officials have postponed a New Year's Eve fireworks celebration after high winds and rough harbor waters made it impossible to tow the fireworks barges into place.

It was my first experience of such a celebration on a New Year's Eve in London. It was very spectacular thousands of people arrived near London Eye to participate in this lovely moment; I found most of them were tourists visiting from across the world. A 10 minutes display of fireworks at London was breathtaking

Photos were taken in Makati City Philippines, where a street party in the country's business district was held to celebrate the coming of a new year...

The Sydney firework display in Australia this year, with the theme of "Creation" and simulated lightning on the pylons of the bridge and thunder realistic crackers came about every 10 minutes from the 9pm display through till midnight.

Taken a short time after midnight at the Metropolitan Hotel Bangkok, one of the many hotels and bars putting on fireworks and celebrations for the New Year dispite the Thai calandar not completing at year until April.

Unfortunatly another bar/club in Bangkok suffered a fire this night and 59 lives were lost.
