Public confidence in the New York Police Department has been shaken by claims that more than a hundred officers were investigated last year over possible collusion with drug gangs and the Mafia.
The allegations include a case of a transport policewoman said to have made money pickups on street corners in the Bronx for her heroin-trafficking boyfriend, and claims that an officer joined a gang that robbed drug dealers while still in uniform.The disclosure of the internal investigations came in the same week that two officers were accused of raping a drunken woman they had been told to escort home. It followed a claim by a former mobster in a Mafia murder trial that two police officers provided back-up in the 1988 drive-by shooting of a drug dealer.
