New York Times Endorses Senator Barack Obama
From Barack Obama for President:
Mr. Obama has met challenge after challenge, growing as a leader and putting real flesh on his early promises of hope and change. He has shown a cool head and sound judgment. We believe he has the will and the ability to forge the broad political consensus that is essential to finding solutions to this nation’s problems.
In the same time, Senator John McCain of Arizona has retreated farther and farther to the fringe of American politics, running a campaign on partisan division, class warfare and even hints of racism. His policies and worldview are mired in the past. His choice of a running mate so evidently unfit for the office was a final act of opportunism and bad judgment that eclipsed the accomplishments of 26 years in Congress.
Given the particularly ugly nature of Mr. McCain’s campaign, the urge to choose on the basis of raw emotion is strong. But there is a greater value in looking closely at the facts of life in America today and at the prescriptions the candidates offer. The differences are profound.
Mr. McCain offers more of the Republican every-man-for-himself ideology, now lying in shards on Wall Street and in Americans’ bank accounts. Mr. Obama has another vision of government’s role and responsibilities.

OK, the endorsement is not surprise (not nearly as big a surprise as the Houston Chronicle).
The summation is particularly to the point -

and this is news and a surprise why?:-)
I think it is more shocking the the Detroit newspaper has endorsed McCain!!!!????

It may not be a surprise, Christopher, but, given the New York Times is a major, influential and nationally read newspaper and its companion, Nytimes.com, allows it to be read internationally, as anything else available online, that should qualify the endorsement story as news.
I agree the Detroit paper is a shock.

Karen Hatter, I like this story. It's good stuff. Your KIDDING ME! Oh I was sure that McCain would get the endorsement of the paper that puts Cindy McCain's Drug history on the front page but never talks about Obama's drug abuse. I knew they would seriously weigh the pros and cons of McCain and give him the nod... the Paper that thinks Sarah Palins clothing is front page news.
Good story, but as you can tell by my sarcasim, I am not surprised

In all honesty, Al, as Zichi wrote in his article, which contained very in depth coverage, which alas was deleted with his account, Mrs. McCain's drug use wasn't the reason for the scrutiny.
It was the machinations that surrounded her drug history that gave the appearance of an almost grand attempt to cover it up, with the most intriguing part of the story being whether or not Senator McCain was aware of her drug problem.

It is a sad state of affairs when our "non-biased" national news outlets feel it their right to chose sides in something so vitally needing of non-partisanship. It is of course no surprise to a daily reader of the NYT that it's a democratic-leaning publication, but to so blatantly align itself with a particular campaign, whether through editorial or "article" is disheartening. The govt. isn't the only thing that's broken in this country.

The Los Angeles Times endorsement was more succinct...and I generally just simply liked it!

Communist rag, endorsing a socialist Communist; wow that is some news. BO, will probably win like Jimmy Carter(JC) did back in the day. JC implemented his Communist agenda much like BO is will do today. After 1 term JC was quickly booted out, JC started fannie mae and freddie mac, just two socialist agendas(Thanks JC), and countless other Commy programs. After a downward plunge which left the US in the toilet JC was not even considered for a second term.
BO is even more liberal than JC, we will have such a devastating annihalation of this country economically, and god forbid any other way, that after one term we will not see another democrat elected for many many terms after; just as it happened after JC.
Buy some gold, build a bunker in your backyard and prepare for mayhem once BO becomes president ;0)

Karen Hatter, not unexpected news - but I wonder if it will sway voters? Someone should compile a master list of all of Obama's celebrity and media endorsements...that would be a lot of heavy-hitting names.

Karen Hatter, I like this story. It's good stuff. At first I thought the NYT should not be so partisan but, having read the whole editorial, I thought it was quite inspiring and pretty hard hitting. I'm impressed.

The New York Times is NO BIG feather in Obama's hat. The rag backs anything Social in nature and that content and Obama are a perfect match for the dying industry of print media.

After a long time United States is battered and drifting out of failed leadership for the past years. But this year the nation’s future is truly safe and in balanced hands. As tough as the times are, the selection of a new president is easy. Barack Obama has met challenge after challenge, growing as a leader and putting real flesh on his early promises of hope and change.
But several of the newspapers and media have endorsed Mr. Obama cited his youth and freshness on the national scene, as factors in their decision. No one knows to what extent its true.
