Newspaper Questions Ahmadinejad, Gets Shut Down, Links to Political Rival Prove Deadly

by PEP | June 22, 2008 at 06:09 am | 530 views | 16 comments | 24 recommendations

UPDATE: This clash between Ahmadinejad and freedom of the press (or what passes for it in countries like Iran) is a story that's gaining legs, as they say. Reuters notes: that the newspaper  "was seen as being close to Tehran Mayor Mohammed Baqer Qalibaf, a conservative who analysts say is a potential rival of Ahmadinejad in next year's presidential election.

This shutdown is the latest in a growing chain of media suppressions in Iran. Among a dozen or so media outlets closed during the last year: one that provided an interview with an Iranian ex-poet.

Ah, yes, fearful people, these poets. Then again, we already knew that, for bards once could make kings tremble.

In 2006, a group of journalists protested the suppression of media under Ahmadinejad.

UPDATE: And today, the newspaper apologized for providing what it called "unfair criticism." However, the newspaper's license is still revoked, and the director must report to the public prosecutor.

Among Ahmadiinejad's complaints: the use of "unflattering" images.

Original post follows.
Malefacere qui vult, numquam non causam invenit, Publilius Syrus told us. And indeed, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad routinely proves that he who wants to do wicked deeds never fails to find a reason.

Authorities have shut down a Tehran newspaper ,the official IRNA news agency reported Sunday, after the paper published a story critical of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's stance on Israel.

Hi Rhonda, I was cruising the 'net and there was another story about A and one of his photos, one of the ones with that big friendly smile. And it again struck me how he's really just a big bully, some of them can pretend to hide that, but they're all really alike. Unfortunately, this bully has power. That happens, too, but sooner or later...karma and justice nail 'em. Thanks for the flag!

Hi azzay, thanks again for the flag. I still don't understand why so many people in my country fawn over A.

PEP, I like this story. It's good stuff.

And, how can someone be an x-poet?

As for Ahmadiinejad, it just reminds me that we are all our own worst enemies.

I have visited this part of the world, and it must be 'helped' out of this 'medieval pit', but bombing it back to dust (DU) is not the solution!

You know, I'm not even sure which poet it is that is expatriate, and why he's so frightening that even an article about him causes A. to shut down a newspaper.

Oh, the power of poets. Really. :)   Somehow we really unsettle those of ill intent--hey, just as the bards taught!

How do we help a country with a bully at the helm, and a cultural/religious system that engenders what it does? This one is indeed a tough situation.

Thanks for the flag!

Sounds like you are talking about Bush...bully at the helm.

PEP

Nope. I'm talking about A. and others like him. True evil.

True evil is what Pep? If America had no nuclear weapons and it had a huge oil resource under its land, and other countries wanted your oil, would you want to have nuclear weapons to protect your oil?  And Pep just because nowpublic has offered the people to write and express freely their views, does not mean that they all do this in America. ABC, CBS, CNN, most of the MSM do not allow freedom of expression or disagreement in opposition to what they support. They ban you for simply saying zionism, even in comments. How does this Iran differ from USA practices. Virtually the same in all practical and truthful observations.

Every nit picking example of evil you can conjure up from Ahmadinejad, or whoever be it Mugabe, Myanmar, Hamas, or the Taliban, I can find double or more evil from the USA and its war crimes.

The point is both and all use violence as a means to justify their violence, and there is no justification to using violence. That is the problem.

"...no justification to using violence." Really? What would you have done with WWII?

I know the typical refrain of leftists is that "violence begets violence" and the such but do you really know what you're talking about? If you can't see a difference between America and Iran then there's nothing that can be done to help you.

Why do you assume that I need help? I am quite alright.  WWII would not have happened was it not for WWI and the crime of the Versailles Treaty imposed on Germany who did not start the war in the first place. WWI was about protecting land areas where America and Britain used to grow their Opium recreational drugs bound for China.  And Yes I really KNOW what I am talking about.
