Ex-Skater Bobek Gets Probation on Meth Count

Five Years Probation For Nicole Bobek - Part of Crystal Meth Drug Ring

In 1995, Nicole Bobek was the U.S. Woman's Figure Skating Champion and now 15 years later she is a convicted drug felon with a sentence of 5 years probation.

The 32-year-old pleaded guilty in June to a charge of conspiring to distribute crystal meth. She was among 28 people accused last year of running a network that allegedly distributed $10,000 worth of methamphetamine per week.

The alleged leader of the group, Edward Cruz Jr., was sentenced last week to 16 years in prison.

Nicole Bobek made her sentencing appearance in New Jersey accompanied by her mother on Monday.  Bobek will serve her probation near Jupiter, Florida near the Bobek family home.

After the sentencing hearing, Nicole Bobek appeared for a TV interview on the Today Show - a transcript of a question is provided below.

can you try to explain to people watching who are probably shaking their heads this morning, nicole , thinking how could this young lady have gone from 18 years old, a national figure skating champion and a dozen or so years later end up in a crystal meth drug ring . can you at least put it into perspective for us?

i can try to. i believe there was a time in my life where i went through a lot of loss, the death of my aunt, my coach, you know, heart break. i am human. and i think i made some bad choices, absolutely, and luckily, i'm given this chance to make a difference and hopefully help others who suffer from aiction problems do benefits, get back on the ice, continue with my treatments and do everything i need to do to change my life around
