Reuters did report today that Niger's state revenue will be up by 26% for 2009 thanks to the Oil income and deals made with China, this in it self is great news for any country and government, and would be positive to its people and economy so one may assume.

However the UN does report at the same time that poverty may be up by 32% for the same period and that minorities such as the Tuaregs in the North and the Peul in the West are living in Famine and are being stressed to the limits.

Wile Niamey, the Capital seems to be accumulating wealth and caviar, the rest of the country is slowly being bleed to death.

See previous coverage on Niger.

Mind you elections are coming, and one could hope that this may help, however all the areas being abused and controlled by the National Nigerien Army are not allowed to vote, the Vote is merely for the South where the Capital Niamey is located as well as Maradi a major City in the South and this area is populated by the current Presidents Clan.

I am always amazed as to how the term Democracy can be miss used and give us a false sense of security and justice.

Income from oil seems to do more harm than good in most countries

The oil minister from Venezuela who created OPEC had that same opinion.  Oil is an accident of nature and he said the country had done nothing to earn it.
