At night, or during sunset, that sign just doesn't cut it...

How's a cyclist supposed to know on their first time riding over this intersection that they are supposed to stop? There were no warnings, no signs, and this unlit sign doesn't really show up well at night or when backlit.

I very nearly got hit on my first time at this intersection, because I never knew that there'd be traffic crossing over the bike lane.
