National Institute of Health Director Francis Collins Denounces Anti-Gay Pediatrician Group

A statement by National Institute of Health Director and former head of the Human Genome Project, Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., sent a strong message to the American College of Pediatricians last Thursday.

The statement from Collins comes as a result of a letter and "fact sheet" about youth sexuality sent out late last month by American College of Pediatricians (ACPED) President Thomas Benton, MD to nearly 15,000 US school superintendents.

Collins admonished the group for distorting his scientific observations to make a point against homosexuality.

“It is disturbing for me to see special interest groups distort my scientific observations to make a point against homosexuality.  The American College of Pediatricians pulled language out of context from a book I wrote in 2006 to support an ideology that can cause unnecessary anguish and encourage prejudice. The information they present is misleading and incorrect, and it is particularly troubling that they are distributing it in a way that will confuse school children and their parents.”

American College of Pediatricians Will Issue Public Statement

A spokeswoman for the ACP said [Friday] the Gainesville, FL-based physician organization was made aware of Collins' statement, and would issue a public statement after Benton attempts to speak with Collins.

According to the "core values" listed on its Web site, ACP takes conservative stances on a number of hot button issues, including the belief that life begins at conception; support of corporal punishment; support of sexual abstinence for adolescents; opposition to same sex marriage; opposition to abortion rights; and opposition to the newly enacted federal healthcare reforms.

Good follow up, Rhonda.

Thank you, Susan. I would like to see Dr. Collins statement mailed to the US School Superintendents who were targeted by this anti-gay group. What do you think:)?

A Really good Idea Rhonda :)

I can only hope for a lawsuit against ACP by Dr Collins

Thank you, Spydermonkey:)! Here's another suggestion by yet another author who wrote on this matter, Warren Throckmorton:

I believe they would do well to take this cue from Francis Collins that the website is misleading and take it down.
