Train entering NJ station crashes (Video)

A commuter train from New York heading into a station for its final stop crashed into the bumpers at the end of he track Sunday morning. The crash shut down service for hours and injured 34 people.

The PATH’s train crash happened at 8:30 am. PATH train service into and out of the Hoboken station was suspended for 11 hours. Some service resumed at 7:30 pm Sunday night, giving officials hope that the Monday morning commute wouldn’t be as hectic as previously thought. It was unclear when all three tracks would be back in service. Travelers were urged to allow extra time for their travel plans.

While none of the injuries were considered life threatening, several people were taken away on stretchers or put in neck braces for precautionary measured. The victims, who for the most part suffered from cuts and bruises, were taken to three area hospitals for observation. Most of the victims were expected to be released Sunday night.

The cause of the crash remains unclear, but police are suspecting a mechanical failure is to blame. Port Authority and city officials said that crews would be working throughout the night to repair the damaged track and other areas of the Hoboken station.

The delays are minimal (with all things considered) for the commute this morning, with additional buses and ferries being provided across the metro area's patchwork of islands and most transit agencies honoring one another's tickets. According to several interview, most passengers are experiencing a 10 to 20 minute delay. Some passengers were even unaware that the crash occurred yesterday.
