Believe it or not, this is in the middle of The Murray river. This is between Hindmarsh Island and the sand hills to the right and is part of the area known.as the Lower Lakes. Beyond the sandhills is the Southern Ocean. The Murray Mouth (or what used to be Mouth) is a few kilometres behind the barrages you can see in the background.
These Barrages were built in the 1930s to ensure stability in the river and lakes and to prevent any backflush of salt water (which did happen occassionaly in times of drought).
Now due to a combination of a major drought (which is natural) and over-allocatoin of water upstream (which is not!), the river and lakes are drying up and likely to die.
If Water does return, the decomposition of soil in the mean time will leach acid and the water will be too acidic to support life.
Ironically, the only solution the Government can come up with is to actually pump seawater into the lakes. - a sure sign they are devoid of ideas and willpower.
