No Clues in Case of Missing Shantina Smiley and 8 Year Old Son
Disappearance of Washington Woman, Shantina "Kat " Smiley, and Son Avriel Carver, Deemed "Suspicious" by Sheriff's Office
Although dive teams and aircraft and rescue teams have been hard at work, there are still no solid clues in the case of a missing 29 year old woman and her 8 year old son, authorities say.
Shantina Smiley and her son Azriel Carver have not been seen since Saturday at 10 pm, when the pair were en route to Smiley's stepfather's house and became lost in the Puget Sound area. Their van was found partly submerged in water, with Smiley's wallet inside, but her purse was gone. No sign of a struggle was found by investigators.
Surveillance cameras caught the woman and child at various convenience stores and diners, and there is a report of a couple allowing Smiley to use their phone to call her grandfather, telling him she was lost, but alright.
Smiley's fiance Robb Simmons says she is a recovering alcoholic and may have relapsed, and that she was taking prescribed medication for anxiety.
The van was found northeast of Boston Harbor on a private beach. It is not clear why Smiley would have been in that area. The Thurston County Sheriff's office said that an underwater camera and sonar radar had been used in the water, to no avail.
No new fingerprints were found within the vehicle when it was dusted by investigators. Smiley's credit cards and ID were in the van.
No New Search Efforts
In an email put out by the Sheriff's Office, it is said that no new search efforts were planned for today, but that a number of tips and leads have been phoned into the office, which will be followed up on.
The Olympia area is midway between Smiley's Silverdale residence and her stepfather's home.
The Coast Guard has been enlisted to aid in the investigation. It is not assumed that the two drowned, and the disappearance has been listed as "suspicious".
Surveillance Records
Smiley and her son were last seen when Smiley knocked on the door of a residence off Boston Harbor Road , requesting directions back to Interstate Highway 5. The couple who answered the door said Smiley appeared nervous and disoriented.
About 9:50 p.m., a store surveillance camera recorded Smiley driving up to the Gull Harbor Mercantile on Boston Harbor Road, but the store had been closed.
Earlier witness accounts placed Smiley and her son at the Martin Way Diner at 9 p.m. Saturday. Smiley bought food and left without paying for it, and appeared to fall down in the parking lot before entering her vehicle with her son and driving away.
About 7:50 p.m. Saturday, Smiley and Azriel stopped and made a purchase at the Handy Pantry on Olympia’s west side.Jill Pribbenow, one of the neighbors who discovered the minivan, said Tuesday that the keys were on the dashboard.
Pribbenow said the dirt road that leads down a steep slope to the beach is especially dark at night and is difficult to navigate. She said the disappearance of Smiley and her son is “completely weird.”
The water current on Dana Passage off Little Fish Trap is extremely fast when the tides change, Pribbenow said.
Simmons has said he was on his way to meet Smiley and her son in Castle Rock on Saturday evening after Cub Scout training. He has a Web page at www.robbsimmons.com where he has shared information about the events leading to Smiley and Azriel’s disappearance.
