No dice Arizona: Federal Court rules
Police cannot randomly spot check and search people to see if they are illegal aliens or not. If someone is discovered to be an illegal alien who was in violation of the law, then the process is to contact immigration service as that is a Federal matter for that jurisdiction.
The lesson is that states cannot circumvent Federal law and due process. This decision does not mean that the administration is not enforcing illegal immigration.
“Breaking News Alert: Appeals court upholds Justice Department challenge of Ariz. immigration law

A federal appeals court on Monday upheld a lower court decision that blocked the most contested provisions of Arizona's immigration law from taking effect.
A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit ruled that a federal judge did not abuse her discretion in blocking provisions of the law that would, among other things, require police to check immigration status if they stop someone while enforcing other laws.
The decision is a victory for the Obama administration, which had filed a controversial lawsuit challenging the Arizona law in court.

I believe that if the police stop someone for a traffic violation, that they should have the right to ask if they are a citizen of the US. If they have a driver's license, then they should be a US citizen, right? Or do illegal immigrants get driver's licenses also? The illegals situation is getting out of hand in the border states. Give more power to the individual states to do as they see fit.
