No Disharmony in Obama’s Adopted Hometown?
In a post last Wednesday, I reported that a joint anti-war protest and immigrants rights rally was set to take place today in Pilsen, the heart of the Chicago’s Latino community. And it did. Unfortunately, it appears most Chicago media outlets seem content with providing little or no coverage of the rally. Perhaps, it's part of an effort to make it appear as if no disharmony exists in President Barack Obama's adopted hometown.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not eager to see such events receive publicity. Far from it. I do, however, support the Constitutional right of American citizens to stage such events whether or not I share their beliefs and values. The fact that today's rally took place only after organizers won a month-long court battle against Chicago city officials should have added to the news value of the event and, indeed, should have been included in any reports by credible reporters.
Unfortunately, few Chicagoans -- and even fewer outside the Land of Lincoln -- will learn about it via the mainstream news media which seems to be short of credible reporters at this time.
Only the Examiner and the Chicagoist offered quality pre-event coverage. Conversely, the Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago Tribune and members of the national media appear to have completely opted out of covering the rally on Saturday. At the same time, two Chicagoland television stations provided coverage that omitted any mention of the above-mentioned court battle that preceded the protest/rally. See reports here and here for proof.
