NP Rank:
No end, 5th nuclear incident France, "Chernobyl jumpstart" of CRUAS Nuclear plant could overheat kernel
Cruas Ardeche France, thursday July 24th 2008
A procedure error at the restart of the reactor could lead to "increased responsiveness of the heart of the Nuclear Central," according to the notice of the ASN. What does it mean? A "chernobyl like jumpstart or stop both can cause immediate overheating of the nuclear kernel with worst case burn through. Rentability to go up by EDF ( french main electricity provider) means security goes down, is it to compare with other countries?
Explainer
June 25 2008, a water boost to the primary circuit reactor number 3 was done while the pumps of the primary circuit stand still, "noted the ASN." In case of failure of the booster circuit, a to high volume of water could have been injected into the primary circuit, causing an increase in radioactivity of the kernel of the nuclear plant
2015
France could earliest start to replace the 14 REACTORS over 40 years old, with not verified life time extension by politics. The EPR is promised to be burn through proved, and air traffic accident safe. However the First EPR is 2 years in delay, heavy overweight protection causes construction delay. Without German or japanese help France may have a delaytime of 10 years. 34 nuclear plants should be replaced in 2025. Remains to mention you can not build a new nuclear plant at the same place.
France may become the nuclear cemetary of Europe.
2003
The ASN (atomic agency) just extended the lifetime nuclear park from 30 to 40 years. Politicians left or right avoided to make the necessary change. France has no wayout. The money for the destruction of the 48 retired nuclear plants has just to be raised now by increasing electricity prices. EDF / Areva have funding of round about 100 million Euros per Plant to be dismantled. The real costs of mass dismantling are estimated between 1 and 5 bn Euros depending on the case per plant.
2008
New player on the Nuclear power market, giant Suez/GDF may improve security with the necessary competition to go ahead.

mettacara, thanks for flag, complicated language tries to downplay the incident, but a burnthrough potential of the reactor is bad remembering chernobyl

True, politics tends to stand in the way of science, especially in regards to making decisions that should and have been proven to be essential.

SOLARLIFE, I like this story. It's good stuff.
What in heaven name is going on in France these days? Finally you are talking about Chernobyl! Yes it is getting worrisome in deed! I do not know how many Chernobyl's it will take before we end up smartening up! Thanks for posting this!

Thanks for comment FionaSara, you are right no decision is the worst decision. 2001 France was obliged to decide, instead the just extended lifetime of "50 old nuclear power plants" to compare with a 1978 Cadillac without Northstar engine. Would we still drive this old car today?

Paschen, don't worry, I have place for a 6th Icon. No I don't really imagine what the hell is going on. Irresponsible uncoordinated actions may unveil a collective collapse disorder in the nuclear monster industry, this is no good news.

Holy Crap! I'm glad I don't live downwind or on one of the cooling rivers. And we want more nuclear power plants!

Thanks for Flag moonwolf, "holy crab" we get nervous here 100 mls from all this packed incidents. The British lost also confidence in french EDF buying for $22bn british energy, means maintaining all british nuclear plants
