Two brothers died this weekend after jumping into a Shasta County lake to save their dog that fell in. 39-year-old Noel Smith from Burney and his brother, 32-year-old Nathan Smith from Citrus Heights were identified by the coroner's office today. The Smith brothers drowned whilst attempting to save their dog.

The Smith brothers' dog fell through the ice of Shasta County's Big Lake in Northern California and the brothers jumped into the icy water to save their dog. They were submerged in the lake from 20-50 minutes before being pulled from the freezing waters by rescuers.

Authorities say two brothers drowned after falling into icy waters while attempting to rescue a dog that fell into a Shasta County lake.

The coroner's office identified the men Monday as 38-year-old Noel Smith of Burney and his 32-year-old brother, Nathan Smith of Citrus Heights.

Another man was present with the brothers and managed to eventually make it out of the water to safety. While the Smith brothers did not survive, their dog did make it out alive.
