North Vancouver Laneway Housing - Another Failed Strategy!

I read a story recently about laneway housing in Vancouver to deal with the issue of disappearing rental apartments, a problem also faced here in North Vancouver City.  I wondered if the city of Vancouver and especially here in North Vancouver where I've lived for the past 26 years, have got their priorities in the right place?  I have watched the stock of affordable rental housing drop substantially over the years-- especially since 1996 when the federal transfer funds to provinces for infrastructure and housing was significantly reduced. Thus, landlords who rent tend to increase their rent by claiming improvements on the properties, even though the improvements are minimal or not at all. I don't think that this new "laneway housing" is going to make a dent in the real problme that thousands of people in Greater Vancouver face -- and that is finding affordable housing! It's all fine to densify where it is appropriate, but this should not be a priority! The priority of Vancouver's mayor and councillors should be to lobby the federal government and the provincial government to make Affordable Housing a priority in the next few months! This deplorable situation should not be allowed to continue! What do you think?

\i think you are both right, and wrong!  there is no one solution to address housing affordability; there is a need for a variety of approaches.  This afternoon \i am part of a group discussion in Vancouver exploring potential ways to increase the stock of affordable rental housing.  \i have a list of 15 potential actions, including lobbying the federal government, which has a major role to play.  But laneway housing could be one additional solution that \i would like to see implemented in vancouver and on the north shore.  i will be talking about this at the housing conference scheduled for may 27 and may 28.  \i hope this is helpful.
