Northwest 188, What's Going On?
Two Northwest Airlines highly trained pilots missed the airport by 150 miles. This episode involved Northwest Airlines flight 188 that was traveling from San Diego to Minneapolis and begs the question: “What were they doing?”
The tower repeatedly was not able to make contact but fortunately planes in the air were eventually successful in making contact with the Northwest plane. However, this was after an extended period of time.
Federal Aviation Administration says the Airbus A320 pilots told the FBI and airport police that they were in a heated Federal Aviation Administration discussion over airline policy and they lost awareness of the situation.
This still does not explain the extended time frame for no contact (one hour and eighteen minutes) and the pilots overshooting the airport (Minneapolis) by 150 miles.
The pilots falling asleep or perhaps unbelievable cockpit sex would make a lot more sense.
This whole episode may end up as a permanent mystery. These two Northwest pilots are perhaps the only ones that will know the real truth here.
